it's a sort of crossroads, the kind of spot where everyone is too busy with their own business and secrets to worry too much about yours.
- vi moradi, on batuu.
batuu was a temperate outer rim planet bordering wild space. it orbited three suns, ubaat-I, -II and -III. it had two moons, destra and valaara, but only valaara was visible from the outpost.
it was once host to massive trees, though they were destroyed in a catastrophe that damaged the planet's surface. the what remained of them became the petrified stone spires that tower over their surroundings.
before the invention of hyperspace travel, it was a popular stop for those heading toward wild space and the unknown regions. hyperspace lanes lead to the decline of the planet's reputation into a backwater forgotten world.
at the edge of the galaxy
so far away
black was the spire
that called me to stay.
a beacon for drifters
forgotten and lost
the spires summoned those
broken and tossed.
come stay here forever
or just pass on through.
the spirit of black spire
will forever change you.
- an old batuuan ballad.
the largest settlement on the planet was known as the black spire outpost. by 34 ABY, it had become a haven for smugglers, scoundrels and other not-quite-legal business. it hosted several spaceports and nine docking bays. docking bay nine was requisitioned by the first order to house their supplies; docking bay five was home to ohnaka transport solutions, a shipping operation run by weequay pirate hondo ohnaka.
the most important part of the outpost were the black spire ruins on the outskirts. they were the remains of the long-ago outpost from the ancient settlers of batuu. it became the home of the resistance on the planet.
galma was a small, rough and underdeveloped settlement. houses there were largely made of scrap, but some were traditional mud houses. galman citizens did not abide by many rules. many were mechanics, scrappers or tradesmen, and as such they were resourceful, opportunistic and versatile.
the inhabitants had few resources and had to scavenge from the surrounding area. the settlement was known for illegal podracing, gambling and droid fighting.
surabat was a tiny settlement in the surabat river valley. it was wild, remote and isolated by harsh weather. it had very few modern convieniences. the citizens of surabat were strong, hardy and reserved, and had the tendency to keep to themselves. many of them were farmers or tended to livestock.
local legend says that several children disappeared from the settlement decades before, but locals are hesitant to discuss this with outsiders.
peka was a small and energetic river community accessed by a long packed dirt road. its inhabitants tended to live in more temporary shelters like tents or cabins made from native trees. it was home to family orientented survivalists who centered their lives around the nearby river. they were outgoing and social, but did not tend to have room for guests looking to stay for long periods.
it was known for fishing and farming, but locals tended to hold recreation to the same importance.
i expect nothing less, sergeant. and before we are done, batuu will never be the same.
